Welsh Borders, 24 to 27 June 2011

Went for a long weekend camping in the Welsh Borders with Planky and Paddy, hoping to make a flying visit to Wixhall Moss to search for White-faced Darter Dragonfly on they way home.

Despite the weather forcast warning of a heatwave our first two days were a total washout with the weather conditions reminiscent of a monsoon.

The promised sun did arrived on Sunday however, and with it lots of wildlife including my first Beautiful Demoiselles. A small number these large, metalic green Damselflies patrolling the stream that ran along the edge of our campsite. Other wildlife noted around camp included Buzzard, Raven, Song Thrush, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Squirel, Brown Hare and Rabbit, along with Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Small Tortoiseshell and Brinstone butterflies.

Monday morning we packed up the tent and headed home via Wixall Moss. The moss was teaming with Large Heath butterflies and numerous types if moth, but dragonflies appeared few and far between. What dragonflies I did see were distant, unidentifiable shapes zipping past at high speed before vanishing from view. I decided a change of strategy was needed so I found a decent sized pool and settled down beside it to wait. This approach proved more productive with several Large Red and Common Blue Damselflies noted along, rather frustratingly, with a couple of distant unidentified small Darters. I could have happily sat beside that pool a good deal longer but my allotted time at this wonderful site was fast coming to an end and spots of rain were just starting to fall, so I made my way back to the car, noting a slendid male Banded Demoiselle enroute.

Hartlepool Headland, 10 and 12 June 2011

Made two unsuccessful attempts to see Britain’s third White-Troated Robin, which turned up unexpectedly on a Bowling Green in Cleveland.

The first was a trip with Binner, Billy and GH, after work on Thursday evening (11th June) . However the bird failed to show, apparently going into hiding from 11:30 a.m. until early friday morning when, to add insult to injury, it performed well all day. So after a little horse trading I persuaded Planky to sacrifice her Saturday and we headed up the A1 once more only to find the bird had again decided not to put in an appearance. We gave it a few hours of “patient” waiting, Planky passing the time sat in the car listening to Radio 4 and me taking pictures of the resident House Sparrows, until the heavens opened and we decided to head for home the Robin still not seen.

I really should get a spider book

All these seen in my back garden this morning, along with a couple of other types that were to small or fast to photograph. I think the green one is a Cucumber Spider but the others are a total mystery.

Ruckland, Lincolnshire, 1 May 2011

While in Skegness visiting my parents at their caravan we took a short trip inland to see the immature White-tailed Eagle that had been hanging around the Wolds village of Ruckland for a number of days.

After a wait of around forty minutes this massive barn-door of a bird drifted into view, circling directly over our heads and dwarfing the three Common Buzzards that were also present.

Upgrade now complete

After a few weeks of work the upgrade of the site is now finished. Features added include an animated latest post section, Facebook like buttons, improved photo galleries and QuickTime videos. There is also a mobile version of the site available if you visit using your smartphone.

Now the upgrade is done I have decided to edit and cull some of the older and less interesting posts. So the archives might be a bit lite on content for the next few weeks or so.

Nocturnal Garden Visitor, 13 April 2011

Took Paddy (the greyhound) into the garden for her pre-bedtime ablutions and noticed she was showing great interest in a flower pot that had fallen out of the greenhouse. A closer investigation revealed her attention was not drawn to the flower pot but rather the round spiny object curled up beside it.
